Ways to Worry Less

6 ways to worry lessSome people are naturally good at maintaining a balanced state of mind, relaxing and shutting down negative thoughts. Others, like me, have to work a little harder to keep worries in check. Whether you consider yourself a “worrier” or not, these tips can help you lighten your mental load and keep you moving forward in a positive direction!

Remind Yourself

Consider this- most of the things you worry about never happen! As a numbers person I remind myself about this all the time to keep my thoughts in check. I love this quote by Mark Twain, “I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them have never happened.”

Go Get Busy

Crowd worry out of your mind by focusing your attention elsewhere. Don’t give yourself a chance to get caught up in negative thoughts - use leisure time to learn a new skill, practice a hobby or help someone in need. When you get lost in a project your brain won’t have a chance to dwell on worries. (2)

Count Your Blessings

Count your blessings and appreciate all that you have. Take inventory and don’t forget about the basics - while you may be coveting a new luxury, do you have food, clean water and a place to live? If you’re feeling “behind” in life try shifting your perspective. (3)

Write it Down

Unload all of your worries and problems onto paper to release them from your mind. You may notice how unimportant or irrational some of your worries can be once you see them written out. Evaluate your negative thoughts from an outside perspective as you might for a friend. (4)

Rehearse Success

Practice visualization to picture yourself succeeding in all of the areas you worry about. Imagine the exact outcome you want and repeat that in your mind. (5)

Meditation

Focus on the present and take it one day at a time. Let go of what happened yesterday and things that can’t be changed and treat every day as a new life!
